Sometimes bleaching produces unexpected results than anticipated, with yellow tinges often being an unwanted outcome. Pre-toning may help make those golden hues appear cooler so that you achieve the result you were hoping for.
Request that your client use violet shampoo when their yellow tint becomes obvious; the color wheel provides insight into which hues cancel each other out for a balanced appearance and will help neutralize brassiness. This should help achieve balance.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
Apple cider vinegar is a beauty-boosting ingredient you’re likely already familiar with and likely have in your pantry. From salad dressings and homemade face masks, to helping prevent dandruff, dry skin conditions and frizzy locks-even hair loss-it has numerous uses!
ACV works to close hair cuticles and strengthen strands, which helps prevent colour pigment loss and promote shine. Furthermore, ACV’s clarifying effects help clear away buildup on your scalp so you don’t experience that crunchy or sticky sensation.
If you want to try making your own ACV rinse at home, combine three tablespoons of five percent ACV with one cup of water and apply in sections, lightly massaging in and letting sit for several minutes before rinsing to remove any scent and let hair air dry naturally – repeat weekly according to Friese.
2. Baking Soda Rinse
One of the best ways to maintain blond and white hair, without yellowing, is using an at-home baking soda solution. Simply mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide (never higher than 3%). Mix until you form a paste, apply to hair, rinse out thoroughly – this mixture will naturally bleach your strands while protecting from yellowing – repeat every month as part of an ongoing regimen.
If your hair features more prominent yellow tones, try switching up its appearance with violet shampoos. A violet shampoo will neutralize any warm tones and provide your strands with a more neutral, cool tone – you can find these at local drugstores or online.
If you want to lighten your blonde locks a bit, consult a stylist about using a color toner. A clear or pale violet toner can help eliminate any yellow undertones and balance out your color perfectly.
3. Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse
Hydrogen peroxide rinses are an excellent way to rid yourself of yellow tinted locks. A salon-recommended treatment, this involves mixing equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide in a plastic bottle and using it after shampooing as a rinse rinse your locks after each shampooing session – for optimal results it should be performed about once every week.
If your clients have bleached blonde hair that’s turning yellow, a quick toning treatment may help them maintain their original shade while preventing brassiness. Try applying violet shampoo (such as Clairol Shimmer Lights ) or purple toning drops as a quick solution.
Limiting beta-carotene intake can also help avoid yellowing of skin. Foods rich in beta-carotene such as sweet potatoes, carrots, winter squash and cantaloupe contain this vitamin and should therefore be eaten sparingly to keep yellowness at bay.
4. Lemon Juice Rinse
If your blonde locks need an extra lightening boost, try this lemon juice rinse. It reveals the golden pigments underlying each strand while brightening strands while not lightening as much as bleach or hydrogen peroxide can.
Too frequent use can dry your hair out and lead to flaking; for optimal results, use this rinse once or twice every week.
Note: Lemon juice works best on natural blonde or light brown shades of hair color, though darker tones might react adversely with it and cause unexpected interactions with hair dyes.
Follow your lemon juice treatment with a toner to maximize its effect. When coloring your hair, speak to a color specialist about how the lemon juice will react. They can provide advice for neutralizing yellow tones; Clairol Shimmering Lights Shampoo contains purple pigment that cancels yellow tones.
